Western District, a contemporary take on classical music, is “hip,” “funky,” and “unconventional,” with an “eclectic repertoire,” says TimeOut HK and HK Mag.
Formed in fall 2014, Western District has sold out Hong Kong’s hottest venues. The ensemble was featured on CNN Español for its innovative tango shows, performed live on RTHK Radio 3, and appeared in a commercial for Shure Asia. The group was nominated for Hong Kong’s Best Band by HKELD, and their Fringe Musica Alegria show was featured on TimeOut HK as an Editor’s Pick event. The group performs and arranges a wide range of music, from baroque to rock, and has worked extensively with composers, premiering works for solo and chamber ensemble.
Highlights of the group’s exciting 2016 lineup include a world premiere of a major multimedia new music project with composer Joyce Tang and photographer David Clarke, commissioned by the ensemble with sponsorship from CASH Music Fund in Hong Kong. Western District will also present its annual music series at the Fringe Club, and produce the Asia premiere of Broadway’s John and Jen, a two-person chamber musical, that looks at the relationship between siblings.
A TimeOut HK review called a recent show “…a human performance. It is rare to see classical performers who so clearly get along with one another, who delight in and are moved by the work.”
Western District brings together award-winning musicians with extensive performing experience around the globe, from New York’s Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall to Hong Kong’s Orange Peel and City Hall.
